This article explains how to backup the Bookmarks/Favorites folder for the most popular browsers. Each browser has a different location where the bookmarks are stored. In order to back-up the favorites, you will need to manually copy that folder or use a backup program to back them up automatically.

You can have your favorites/bookmarks backed up automatically by using Backup4all. Simply define a backup job for the browser you want to back-up and schedule it to run automatically. This way if you lose your bookmarks folder, you can easily restore it from your backup. Below are the instructions on how to do this for the most popular browsers.

How to backup Internet Explorer Favorites

Internet Explorer Favorites plugin is installed by default in Backup4all. If this plugin is missing from your computer, you can download it from here then load it in File -> Tools -> Plugins page.
Using the plugin for Internet Explorer Favorites, Backup4all will automatically select the files to be backed up.
Follow these steps to create a new backup job based on this plugin:
  1. Open Backup4all and select File -> New (Ctrl+N).
  2. In the Where do you want to save the backup? section, select a backup destination.
  3. On the What do you want to backup page, under "Applications" list, select Internet Explorer Favorites plugin. Press Next.
  4. On the Filter the backup sources page, you can set include/exclude filters for backup sources. Then press Next.
  5. On the How do you want to backup page, you can choose the backup type and the encryption.
  6. On the When do you want to backup page, you can set the backup job to automatically run on the specified time and days. Press Next.
  7. On the Personalize your backup job page, enter a name for the backup in the Backup name field.
  8. Press Save and run.

Manually backup the Internet Explorer Favorites

If your web browser is Internet Explorer, the location for the favorite's folder is:
C:\\Users\\<Current User>\\Roaming\\Favorites\\
Note: <Current User> is your Windows name account.

How to backup Opera bookmarks

If your web browser is Opera, you can download the Opera plugin from here then load it in File -> Tools -> Plugins page.
Using the plugin for Opera bookmarks, Backup4all will automatically select the files to be backed up.

  1. Open Backup4all and select File -> New (Ctrl+N).
  2. In the Where do you want to save the backup? section, select a backup destination.

If your web browser is Opera, the location for the bookmarks folder is:
C:\\Users\\<Current User>\\AppData\\Roaming\\Opera\\Opera\\profile\\opera6.adr

How to backup Mozilla Firefox bookmarks

If you use Mozilla Firefox as web browser and want to backup bookmarks, you can download the plugin from here then load it in File -> Tools -> Plugins page.
Using the plugin for Mozilla Firefox bookmarks, Backup4all will automatically select the files to be backed up.
Follow these steps to create a new backup job based on this plugin:

If your web browser is Mozilla Firefox, the location for the bookmarks is:
C:\\Users\\<Current User>\\AppData\\Roaming\\Mozilla\\Firefox\\Profiles\\RANDOMSTRING.default\\bookmarks.html
