Lockergnome feature

Backup4all is a bargain

"Backup4all lives up to its marketing claims. It’s versatile, has all the features you need, and is easy to use. The beginner can easily get a good backup the first time. And the professional can tweak the program until his backup hums along exactly as he wants it to. It runs on every Windows OS from 95 to XP, too. From $25 - $45, depending on the version you buy, Backup4all is a bargain."

ProNetworks review

A wealth of features

"We were quite pleasantly surprised to find that Backup4all installed and worked well on the latest Vista release. While this is still a Beta Operating system, it is nice to see that this program seems to be Vista compatible and that it will even use the Vista Aero theme without difficulties."

Sofpedia pick

Rated excellent by Softpedia

"To be honest, I always say "I'll burn that backup folder someday this week" and the week passes without having my files backed up. With a program like Backup4all this issue can disappear, and the stress related to “what if my hard drive crashes” problem will disappear. I think that I'll leave the backup tasks for this program from now on. What about you?"

The Office Letter review

Backup4all is flexible

"You can’t be too careful about your data, and Backup4All does a good job using a well-designed interface, with plenty of bells and whistles for more experienced users. A "standard" version may be all you need if you don’t want e-mail notification or AES 128, 192, and 256-bit encryption."

Summary

This article explains how to back up data keeping the original file format (without using compression ).

On this page:

How to back up data without using zip compression
How to back up only the new and modified files without using zip compression

Details

Backup4all offers four types of backups: full backup , incremental backup, differential backup and mirror backup. The Mirror backup type is the only one that does not use zip compression. The resulted backup will be an exact copy (mirror) of the source files, without altering their initial file format. This is the fastest type of backup because there is no file compression and no zip files are created (but occupies the most space).

How to back up only the new and modified files without using zip compression

Using Mirror backup with the Fast Mirror option checked (marked by default), you can back up files and folders without compressing them, and subsequent backups will only copy the new and modified files. The new files will be stored in the same destination folder and the modified files will overwrite the existing files from the backup destination.

Steps needed to configure the backup for Backup4all 4:

    1. Open Backup4all and select File->New Backup (Ctrl+N).
    2. On the first page, enter a name for the backup in the Name field.
    3. On the Where do you want to save your backup page, select a destination for the backup. Click Next.
    4. On the What do you want to backup page, add the files and folders to be backed up. Click Next.
    5. On the How do you want to backup page, select Make mirror from the drop down list. Press Advanced mode.
    6. Set (check) the Fast mirror option from the Mirror page.
    7. Click Save and run.

For Backup4all 3:

    1. Open Backup4all and select File->New Backup Wizard (Ctrl+N).
    2. On the General page enter a name for the backup in the Name field.
    3. On the Sources page, add the favorite's folder. Click Next.
    4. On the Destination page, select a destination for the backup. Click Next.
    5. On the Type page, select the Mirror backup type.
    6. Set (check) the Fast mirror option.
    7. Click Finish.

Note:

- Using Tags , the Fast mirror option will be ignored if you choose to create subfolders in the destination with a different name each time.
- Using the Mirror backup type, only the latest file version will be available for restore.

Once this backup job was defined, you can start the actual backup by pressing the Backup button (or F6). Additionally you can schedule this backup job to be executed automatically at certain time intervals.
