Backup the Favorites folder

This article explains how to backup the Bookmarks/Favorites folder for the most popular browsers. Each browser has a different location where the bookmarks are stored. In order to back-up the favorites, you will need to manually copy that folder or use a backup program to back them up automatically.

You can have your favorites/bookmarks backed up automatically by using Backup4all. Simply define a backup job for the browser you want to back-up and schedule it to run automatically. This way if you lose your bookmarks folder, you can easily restore it from your backup. Below are the instructions on how to do this for the most popular browsers.

How to backup Internet Explorer Favorites

Internet Explorer Favorites plugin is installed by default in Backup4all. If this plugin is missing from your computer, you can download it from here then load it in File->Tools->Plugins page (in Backup4all 4 go to Tools->Plugins page).

Using the plugin for Internet Explorer Favorites, Backup4all will automatically select the files to be backed up.

Follow these steps to create a new backup job based on this plugin:

  1. Open Backup4all, go to menu and select File->New Backup (Ctrl+N).
  2. On the first page enter a name for the backup in the Name field.
  3. Select a destination for the backup and press Next.
  4. From the Selection of files and folders drop-down list, select Internet Explorer Favorites plugin.
  5. On the next page, select the backup type: full, differential, incremental or mirror.
  6. Click Save, then Save and run.

Manually backup the Internet Explorer Favorites

If your web browser is Internet Explorer, the location for the favorite's folder is:

  • in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8:

C:\Users\<Current User>\Roaming\Favorites\

  • in Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\<Current User>\Favorites\

 

Note: <Current User> is your Windows name account.

How to backup Opera bookmarks

If your web browser is Opera, you can download the Opera plugin from here then load it in File->Tools->Plugins page (in Backup4all 4 go to Tools->Plugins page).

Using the plugin for Opera bookmarks, Backup4all will automatically select the files to be backed up.

Follow these steps to create a new backup job based on this plugin:

  1. Open Backup4all, go to menu and select File->New Backup (Ctrl+N).
  2. On the first page enter a name for the backup in the Name field.
  3. Select a destination for the backup and press Next.
  4. From the Selection of files and folders drop-down list, select Opera plugin.
  5. On the next page, select the backup type you prefer.
  6. Click Save, then Save and run.

  • in Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8:

How to backup Mozilla Firefox bookmarks

If you use Mozilla Firefox as web browser and want to backup bookmarks, you can download the plugin from here then load it in File->Tools->Plugins page (in Backup4all 4 go to Tools->Plugins page).

How to backup Google Chrome bookmarks

Manually create the backup job for your favorites/bookmarks files

Please follow these steps:

  1. Open Backup4all and select File->New Backup (Ctrl+N).
  2. On the first page, enter a name for the backup in the Backup Name field.
  3. In the Where do you want to save the backup? section, you can select the backup destination. Click Next.
  4. On the What do you want to backup page, add the Favorites/Bookmarks folder/file. Click Next.
  5. On the third page, you can choose the backup type and the encryption.
  6. Click Finish.
